Constantine Law partner, Alex Finch, writing in The Engineer, paints a fairly bleak picture for employers looking to sponsor workers in the IT and engineering sectors, after the government's changes to the sponsorship regime came into force last month.
The legal changes, part of the government's plan to bring down net migration, are making it significantly more expensive for employers to sponsor foreign nationals. He cites the example of a foreign national electrical engineer who would now have to be paid £41,100 starting salary to receive sponsorship, compared with £27,510 had they been sponsored only 2 years ago.
Alex also urges caution to anyone thinking they might inflate a worker's salary to meet immigration rules as this is not permitted and employers could face legal and financial consequences to such actions.
